Extract from the Executive summary
A greenhouse gas inventory identifies and quantifies major sources and sinks of greenhouse gases and trends. This provides a robust evidence base and an essential tool to evaluate Auckland’s progress toward the goal of halving emissions by 2030 set by Te-Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland's Climate Plan, frame mitigation actions and inform future policy development. This inventory reports greenhouse gas emissions and carbon removals within the Auckland region for the calendar years from 2009 to 2024. Emissions from major sources in 2024 are presented alongside a comparison of changes from 2023 (previous year), from 2016 (baseline year) and then 2009 (first year of emissions reported).
Transport was the dominant source
In 2024, Auckland’s gross emissions were 10,515 kilo-tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (kt CO2e) and when land and harvested wood products (HWPs) were included, net emissions were 9,887 kt CO2e. Transport and stationary energy were the dominant sectors, accounting for 45.3% and 27.3% of gross emissions, respectively. Carbon dioxide (CO2) contributed 86.2%, methane (CH4) 8.3%, nitrous oxide (N2O) 2.4% and other greenhouse gases 3.1%.
