The Auckland waterfront is an important multi-land use area for the city: Industrial and commercial entities such as the Ports of Auckland and fisheries share space with recreational facilities, tourists, businesses and shoppers in one of the most densely populated areas of New Zealand. The proximity of the port and the associated visiting vessels to this central Auckland location provides easy access to Auckland’s commercial centre for industry and tourists alike, but also raises concerns regarding possible impacts on the environment. Studies carried out world-wide have shown that shipping emissions impact upon the air quality of coastal areas adjacent to shipping routes, to the detriment of human health and the local environment.

Auckland’s sustained population growth and its projected future growth, puts pressure on the natural environment. The concentration of people living in one particular area requires resources – land, water, energy, infrastructure and material flows. Economic efficiencies can be made through concentrating large numbers of people who live and work in urban areas, but resource flows also create waste streams and require the conversion of natural or rural land to built form.

Increased density in already urbanised areas of Auckland will be required to reach the goals of a compact city set out in The Auckland Plan, and will require a significant level of redevelopment and intensification. However, the presence of multi-owned properties across the city presents a barrier to redevelopment. In this regard, cross lease title and unit title properties are the most prevalent type of multi-owned property in Auckland, with these two title types accounting for 31 per cent of all titles in Auckland.

After the 2016 Auckland Council elections, a survey was conducted to understand candidates’ awareness of the ‘Love your Auckland – Stand for council’ campaign, their experiences of the nomination process, their awareness and usage of the resources available to them, and to identify areas for future service improvement. A total of 38 per cent of candidates (164 out of 427) responded to the survey. This document is a summary of the main report (Auckland Council technical report TR2017/004) and presents a snapshot of the results of the survey.

The significant threat of increased terrestrial sediment runoff into estuaries and coastal zones as a result of land use changes was recognised by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and the Auckland Regional Council (ARC) in the 1990s. Starting with Okura in 2000, the ARC began ecological monitoring in order to better assess the impacts of sediment loads on the health of valued estuarine resources. The abundances of nine macrofauna taxa, macrofaunal community characteristics and bed sediment characteristics are now monitored at four sites in each of seven east coast estuaries (Puhoi, Waiwera, Orewa, Mangemangeroa, Turanga, Waikopua and Whangateau), with 10 sites sampled in Okura due to the developments proposed within its catchment and immediate shoreline.

It is internationally accepted that human greenhouse gas emissions are the dominant cause of recent global climate change, and that further changes will result from increasing amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Auckland Council and Council Controlled Organisations commissioned the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) to provide climate change projections, including high-resolution maps for the Auckland region.   This work will help support greater resilience and sustainable decision-making under a changing climate.

The Auckland Plan, adopted in 2012, lays out aspirational targets to achieve reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, 10 to 20 per cent by 2020, 40 per cent by 2040 and 50 per cent by 2050 (based on 1990 levels). Auckland’s Low Carbon Action Plan, launched in 2014, sets out the pathways and specific actions to achieve the target. An inventory that identifies and quantifies the sources and sinks of GHGs in Auckland provides an essential tool to inform and evaluate our progress.

The Auckland Plan specifically identifies that Auckland’s Rainbow communities are an important part of Auckland’s diversity, and reinforces the importance of ensuring that they have equal opportunities to participate and contribute in Auckland’s daily life.   The focus of this report is on Auckland’s vibrant and diverse rainbow communities and the purpose of the project was to review the available literature in order to - outline key challenges that rainbow communities in Auckland face, on an individual and collective level; - identify gaps in the current literature; and - identify opportunities for further responses by Auckland Council.

This report outlines the results of a two phase survey, undertaken to assess residents’ awareness of and attitudes towards voting in the 2016 Auckland Council elections. The first wave of research benchmarked residents’ awareness of the 2016 council elections and intention to vote prior to the commencement of the Voter Awareness communications campaign. Once the campaign and the elections had taken place, a second wave of research was undertaken to measure awareness, impact and effectiveness of the campaign.
