Auckland Council’s Animal Management Unit issues more than 5000 dog infringements per year. Current payment rates are low, resulting in a large number of infringements being referred to a Ministry of Justice court process that imposes additional sanctions on recipients. RIMU partnered with Animal Management to apply behavioural insights to improve infringement letters, with the goal of increasing payment rates.

Labour market dynamics are inextricably linked to the social and economic well-being of a society. The role of the labour market in improving economic and social outcomes is recognised by local and central government. For Auckland Council, many of the issues addressed in this report are of central importance to delivering both the Auckland Plan 2050, the long-term spatial plan for the city (Auckland Council, 2018) and the Mayor’s vision for Auckland, ‘a world class city where talent wants to live’.

Safeswim is Auckland’s programme for informing the public about beach and lagoon water quality to prevent illnesses. In 2017, the programme was significantly overhauled and Auckland Council’s Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU) was asked to evaluate the impact of these changes. Auckland has 10 years to make major changes before climate change takes hold with catastrophic consequences. As requested, we have analysed the elemental composition of airborne particulate matter samples collected onto filters at the Queen Street central Auckland air quality monitoring site. In addition, we have also analysed the composition of an airborne particulate matter sample collected by Dr Joel Rindelaub (Research Fellow at the School of Chemical Sciences, University of Auckland), adjacent to the Sky City complex overnight on 22–23 October 2019. We present a description of the samples and sampling sites, the analytical methodology and results, along with a brief contextual review in terms of other combustion sources and the contaminants produced therein.
