Breathing clean air is critical to protecting our health. Human activities release chemicals into the atmosphere in the form of gases and small particulate matter that may damage human health and ecosystems. Pollution can sometimes be observed in the form of a brown haze that occasionally shrouds the city or by the presence of unpleasant odours.

Auckland’s climate plays a key role in shaping our natural environment and how we use it. Auckland Council monitors several climate variables, including temperature (air, freshwater and marine) and rainfall. For many sites we have relatively long data records – rainfall monitoring in Albert Park began back in 1872! They help us understand the patterns we see in other monitoring data.
