This report reviews the evidence that there are economic benefits associated with 'agglomeration' - the increased concentration or clustering of economic activities - in the Auckland region. It provides a review of the links between agglomeration and productivity (measured as 'average personal earnings'), and provides analysis of 2001 Census data that shows a general relationship between increased employment density and increased income within the Auckland region. This report also provides an analysis of the impact of transport 'accessibility', or the ease with which workers and goods and services can move around the region, on employment density; arguing that greater investment in public transport in particular will be required to support the increases in employment density that are likely to lift Auckland's productivity.
