This report presents a summary of the demographic characteristics of 2016 Auckland Council election candidates, as well as a comparison between candidates and the Auckland adult population (aged 18 years and older). The analysis shows that, for the 2016 Auckland Council election: - Female candidates were underrepresented within the total candidate pool. A higher percentage of female candidates were elected than male candidates, however, resulting in a representative balance of male and female elected members.

The question of how much social housing we need in Aotearoa New Zealand is something of a ‘wicked problem’—one that relies on first answering a number of conditional questions. These questions include the extent and nature of unmet housing need, and the resolution of that fundamental question of how best to help those people and households at risk of housing-related poverty.

This record summarises the feedback the Local Government Commission received during the community engagement programme the Commission held between September and December 2016. The purpose of the engagement was to hear from the Auckland community, particularly residents and/or ratepayers of Rodney and Waiheke Island, about Auckland local government arrangements. The engagement revealed that many people think improvements could be made to local government arrangements in Auckland to reflect the local needs of more isolated and/or rural areas in Auckland.

The Auckland Council regularly monitors groundwater levels and quality (physical, chemical and microbiological properties) within some of the region’s aquifers as part of its state of the environment (SoE) programme. The primary purpose of the SoE groundwater programme is to provide information on the status and long-term trends of groundwater at a regional scale, thus providing evidence for availability and the sustainability of water allocation. The results enable Auckland Council to assess if the groundwater is suitable for potable supply, supporting plant and animal life when discharged as baseflow to rivers, saline intrusion risk and how groundwater quality changes over time.
