The Core Cities Project is the result of investment by Ministry of Business, Innovation and EmploymentLocal Government New Zealand and the six cities, Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Tauranga and Wellington. Its primary goal is to build a shared understanding of the economic contribution and core strengths of New Zealand'slargest cities. The project also provides a common baseline for councils and the government to use to remove barriers and strengthen the platform for businesses to grow, export and create high-value jobs.The Core Cities Project was initiated in August 2011.
