Health of the Maori language in Tamaki Makau Rau 2006

This report provides a review of the status and use of the Maori language in Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland. It is based on findings from the 2006 Census, and the Te Puni Kokiri 2001 and 2006 Maori Language Surveys. Key areas of focus include reading, writing, speaking and listening proficiency amongst the Maori population in Tamaki Makaurau; and the use of the language in the home and the community. The report also explores what education opportunities are available to both adults and children who want to learn Maori; and the levels of uptake of Maori language services.
