Waitemata Local Borard urban forest 2013 Auckland Council Research and Evaluation Unit research project. ‘Urban forest’ comprises all the trees within a city – including parks, coastal cliffs, stream corridors, private gardens and streets; it provides a multitude of benefits for the environment, the economy and community health and wellbeing. Recent changes to the Resource Management Act 1991 prohibited the use of urban general tree protection rules and, subsequent to these changes, there has been much debate in the community and media about a possible ‘great chainsaw massacre’ of Auckland’s urban trees.

Auckland forest restoration Auckland Council Research and Evaluation Unit research project. Indigenous forest and wetland restorations are commonly undertaken in Auckland Council parks, as part of new developments and in the creation of ‘green infrastructure’. The use of restoration as a resource management tool has dramatically increased in the past decade.

RIMU scientists are investigating the diversity and abundance of native plants and birds, animal pests, and plant pests (weeds) in a representative network of indigenous forest remnants located throughout the Auckland metropolitan area. Sampling is plot and transect based.

Soil bacterial communities map Auckland Council Research and Evaluation Unit research project. In collaboration with the University of Auckland, Auckland Council's state of the environment (SOE) soil quality monitoring programme is moving to the next level: investigating the potential of soil bacterial communities as indicators of soil health. Bacterial communities are assessed in soil samples collected annually as part of SOE programmes across a range of soil types and land uses from around the country.

Water quality buoy on boat Auckland Council Research and Evaluation Unit research project. Continuous water quality buoys are being deployed in select estuaries as part of integrated catchment monitoring projects around the Auckland region. These buoys will greatly enhance our understanding of the short-term changes in water quality that we may not be capturing in our monthly water quality monitoring.

Main findings 1. There are many cross lease and unit tiles in Auckland Close to one-third of all titles in Auckland are multi-owned, either being cross lease (18 per cent) or unit titles (13 per cent).
